Spade Drill Bits
Why choose a spade drill bit?
Spade drill bits are used for a variety of cutting purposes and can be fitted to CNC and conventional lathes, milling machines and machining centres. The spade drill bit comes in two parts, a metal body and a removable bit that clamps into the place.
One benefit of spade drills is that the operator can use various insert different size blades with the same holder, enabling them to quickly swap between inserts. This is more economical than having to stock a drill bit for every diameter and change it each time it’s needed. Using the Europa Spade Drill Holder Morse Taper it is possible to drill from 9.5mm to 114mm diameter using just nine different sized holders. Spade drill bits also come in a variety of lengths for cutting at different depths.
Spade drill bits are excellent at removing larger quantities of metal at high removal rates. The spade bit itself has special notches along the cutting edge that are designed to evacuate chips effectively.

Spade Drills FAQs
Spade drill bits can be used to make holes in all types of material, including all types of metal. The spade drill bits we sell are to be used on special cutting machines, not in hand tools. These aren’t the type of spade drill bits you use to cut into wood!
Yes. Internal holes within the holder allow coolant to be channelled through it, which enables them to operate safely at high speeds.
The drill bit shank connects to the chuck. There are two common spade drill bit shank types: Morse taper and straight shank.
- Morse taper spade drill bits – Morse taper shanks are cone-shaped with the shank looking a little like a screwdriver head. The shaft is a cylindrical, and narrows to a flat bit at one end. Morse taper spade drill bits require a special chuck to work. Holders are available with a straight or spiral flute.
- Straight shank spade drill bits – In a straight shank spade drill bit the diameter of the drill bit, shaft and shank are the same. Holders are available with a straight or spiral flute.
At R.D. Barrett we stock both morse taper and straight shank spade drill bits.
