Why choose a carbide drill bit?
Carbide drill bits are made from a combination of carbon and metal. Forged at temperatures in excess of 1500 °C, solid carbide drill bits can tackle the toughest jobs. They can be operated at high speeds because they can absorb heat more effectively than other types of cast-metal drill bit. This makes them suitable for taking on tough challenges like cutting through solid metals.
Carbide drill bits are specialist tools that must be handled with care. While they are capable of drilling through the hardest materials, they are fragile and brittle and can break if they are treated poorly or used incorrectly.
Europa carbide drill bits
Europa is a leading supplier of precision cutting tools. The UK-based business has been producing high-performance machining equipment, including carbide drill bits, since 2004. At R.D. Barrett, we sell a handpicked selection of the best tools on the market and are confident that the Europa range offers excellent performance and value-for-money for our trusted customers.
Carbide Drills FAQs
Carbide still bits can be used to machine steel (including hardened steel and stainless steel), nickel alloys, aluminium, cast iron, graphite, titanium and other abrasive materials. They should not be used with hand tools or presses, but in production drilling with a high-quality tool holder and equipment. The fragile nature of carbide means that expensive carbide drill bits can break easily if they aren’t treated with care.
Carbide drill bits like the Inox Geometry TiAlN Coated Carbide Through Coolant 3xD Jobber Drill are engineered with a special flute shape that makes them highly-effective at cutting through the hardest materials, including stainless steel and nickel alloys. They come with a high-performance TiALN (titanium) coating that protects the drill bit’s finish and extends its lifespan, delivering impressive, ongoing performance.
Carbide drill bits can generate significant amounts of heat, which is why many come with coolant bores inside the drill bit to reduce the high-temperatures, improving performance and extending operational lifespan. A special machine feeds coolant to the drill bit and cools it while it’s being used.
The Europa Carbide Drill 3xD comes in both standard and through coolant options, depending on your requirements. Centre drilling isn’t necessary with this hard wearing drill bit, with the attractively priced product delivering an attractive cost-per drilled hole.
Carbide drill bits come in a variety of diameters. Because they are typically used for precision machining where every millimetre matters, we always have a wide variety of carbide drill bits in stock, including:
- Europa Solid Carbide Jobber Drill bits are available in all diameters from 3.0mm to 20.0mm.
- Europea 3xD carbide drill bits are available in diameters between 3.0mm and 20.0mm.
- Europa 5xD carbide drill bits are available in diameters between 1.0mm and 20.0mm.
- Europa 8xD carbide drill bits are available in diameters between 3.0mm and 14.0mm
- Europa 90º Carbide Spotting & Centre Drill are available in diameters between 6.0mm and 20.0mm
- Europa 120º Carbide Spotting & Centre Drill are available in diameters between 6.0mm and 20.0mm.
Carbide drill bits are made entirely of carbide whereas carbide tipped drill bits are cast from other metals and have a carbide tip applied to them. Carbide-tipped drill bits aren’t as hard wearing as solid carbide drill bits and won’t deliver the same machining performance. They are also not suitable for cutting specific materials, including all forms of steel. Solid carbide drill bits deliver exceptional cutting performance when used appropriately.
